    Van Dijk began his career in his homeland with Groningen, before moving to Celtic in 2013. He won four Scottish titles, two Scottish Cups, and one Scottish League Cup with the club. In 2015, he moved to Southampton for £13 million and signed a six-year contract.

    In 2018, Van Dijk joined Liverpool for £75 million, making him the most expensive defender of all time. He has been described by former Southampton manager Claude Puel as “a leader,” while former Celtic manager Ronny Deila described him as “the perfect player.”

    Virgil van Dijk was born on July 8, 1991, in Breda, a city in the southern part of the Netherlands. Van Dijk started playing football at the local amateur club WDS'19, and later joined the youth academy of Willem II Tilburg, a professional football club in the Netherlands.


    He had a lot of potential as a young player and eventually was identified by FC Groningen, a Dutch professional football team, where he began his professional career.
